Hackathon
Traditionally a ‘hackathon’ is an event that brings together idea generators, coders, designers, programmers and more to collaboratively work on one project. On Wednesday, October 20th Edmonton will have its own Hackathon in conjunction with the Beyond 2010 Conference and partners Microsoft and Edmonton Girl Geek Dinners.
This Hackathon will be slightly different than most…
1. We will be handing off and sharing what we’ve done with some international cities as we ‘follow the sun’. This exciting component of the Hackathon opens the door to infinite possibilities.
2. During the evening hours at the Hackathon we are happy to join with Edmonton Girl Geek Dinners for one of their events. The Edmonton Girl Geek’s Dinner will turn into a ‘mixer’ for this one evening, where Hackathon attendees, conference delegates and geeks of all sort can come together to mingle, chat, network and have a great time.

Customarily a hackathon is held over multiple days, however ours will be for only 24 hours. It is for this reason that instead of the usual conceptualize-on-site format; we will layout a few options (see below), choose one concept or two and go forward from there. This hackathon will be more of a ‘design & discovery’ event rather than a ‘development’ event.
What we’ll do at the Hackathon
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Hurricane Katrina. 2010 Haiti earthquake. 2010 Indian floods. Great disasters with tremendous loss of life and destruction. If your city or town experienced a natural disaster would you know what to do? Where to go if you’re hurt? Where to gather in your community? How about just being warned in the first place?
These are the areas we would like to focus and expand on at this Hackathon. Our goal is to have one solid concept idea for an application and/or a website that we can build upon, and then offer openly to cities and towns around the world.
Join us for this day of brain storming, idea generation and at the end of it all, helping cities around the world.
If you are a copy writer, developer, programmer, designer, engineer, marketer or have a knack for problem solving and generating ideas – we want you at this event!
The Hackathon will be a 24-hour event, come for a little or as long as you’d like.
We will begin the Hackathon at 9:15am Wednesday, October 20th, and continue until 9:15am Thursday, October 21st, we will need people to join us to help conceptualize and begin development on the chosen application/website.
To make this a fun event and as a thanks we will be supplying refreshments, snacks and lunch, not to mention your opportunity to join us for the Edmonton Girl Geeks Mixer the evening of the Hackathon.
