The two-day Beyond 2010 Edmonton conference was filled with lots of challenging, engaging conversations that provided different perspectives on the impact of information technology in our lives. Here is a brief overview of the sessions and a few tweets relating to each.

Opening Keynote: What's in Your Future: How to Prosper in an Era of Exponential Growth

Jack Uldrich talked about constant change and new paradigms happening all the time and often we’re not even aware of them. He encouraged us to think anything is possible if we use our imaginations and dream big.

Launch of Hackathon

Over 24 hours, Girl Geeks Dinner, Edmonton chapter, brought together interested people from Edmonton, Seoul, South Korea and Birmingham, U.K. to develop ideas for applications that can be used in communicating during major disasters.

Comprehensive overview of the history of Aboriginal people in Canada and how past efforts to assimilate Canada’s First Nation’s people have now resulted in tragic results: Highest suicide rate in Canada and 50 per cent of people in Canada’s correctional facilities.

Keynote - The digital revolution: What happens when we cross the halfway point?

Lots of humour and incredible insights from a person who proudly declares his geekiness. Showed the different relationship the younger generation has with technology compared to the “old folks”, anyone over 40. His visits to the Google and Facebook offices and what he learned are worth the price of the conference: The help desk Ninjas and stopping a project because it may not achieve $1 billion in a set time period.

Edmonton worked with Birmingham and Seoul to develop an application for muster points during an emergency and different emergency response kits during an emergency. Great work within a tight deadline.

The closing remarks summarized well what had gone on over the past two days. Jack made the point repeatedly that we need to be open to new possibilities and embrace change. He cited Edmontonstories’ Under the Bridge podcast as the mark of a strong, vibrant city that can embrace all aspects of its identity including what makes us think and want to further improve.
